Furney Alfred Prevatte (b. September 23, 1842 – d. October 17, 1940), was 98 years old when he passed away. He was a Private in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He fought in the battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Gettysburg, and was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was a prisoner at Elmira, NY until the end of the war. He returned after the war and married Isabelle Frances Curry (b. November 22, 1844 – d. September 1, 1914) from Lumber Bridge on January 4, 1866. They had the following children:

It is believed that Orpah was named after her aunt Orpah Jane Prevatte Nye, the daughter of Furney Alfred Prevatt and Sallie Nichols. Orpah married Charles Edwin Jones (b. August 28, 1887 – d. April 30, 1951). Both of them were deaf and mute and attended the School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC. Charles could hear with the use of a hearing aid. Both were expert lip readers and could communicate orally in spite of the handicap. They taught in the deaf school in Talladega, Alabama, where Charles became superintendent of the school. After, Charles’ death Orpah taught in West Virginia. They had no children and are buried in the cemetery at Saddletree Baptist Church, Robeson County, NC. She was survived by one sister, Mrs. L. J. Smith of Raeford; her step-mother, Mrs. Dora Prevatte of Marietta; three half-sisters, Mrs. Lyle Smith of Shelby, Mrs. Rebecca Thompson, and Mrs. Hugh Walters of Marietta.
